The Learning Curve Nobody Likes to Talk About in Automation

The first time you walk into a -20°F freezer, your body tells you to turn around. It is not normal cold. It is heavy. It gets your attention fast. Your eyelashes freeze. Your breath changes. The whole place feels like it was built for somebody else.


Years ago, I was asked to run a maintenance team in a massive refrigerated warehouse. It was a serious operation, moving huge volumes of food through a deep-freeze environment. There was one problem. I was completely unqualified.


I did not know industrial refrigeration. I did not understand ammonia systems, evaporator coils, or the small details that mattered in that building. I was walking into a world where other people had instincts I did not have. That feeling has stayed with me because it taught me something important about walking into any new environment.



The Old Playbook Stops Working


The real lesson from that freezer was not about the cold.

It was about what happens when you step into something new and realize your old playbook does not apply. The habits that made you effective somewhere else are not enough here. You have to slow down, pay attention, ask better questions, and build a new way of operating.


That is what automation is for a lot of people.


An operator can be the best on the floor for 20 years. They know what normal sounds like. They know when a pallet is off before anybody else sees it. They know the flow, the rhythm, the shortcuts, and the warning signs. Their paradigm works. It was earned through repetition.


Then automation shows up, and success starts to look different.

The old instincts are not always the right instincts anymore. Timing changes. Hand-offs change. What you watch changes. What good looks like changes. That is not a failure.


That is a learning curve.



A New Paradigm for Good Work


This is the part people need to be more honest about.


When automation enters an operation, it creates a new paradigm. Not because the people were doing something wrong before, but because the tool changes the shape of the work. The best operator in the old system may not feel like the best operator on day one of the new system. That can be frustrating. It can feel personal. It can feel like hard-earned experience is being discounted.


I do not think that is what is happening.


I think the standard for success is being rebuilt in real time. And that takes patience.


If somebody has spent years becoming excellent with one set of tools, one set of signals, and one set of workflows, it is unrealistic to expect instant mastery with a new one. You would not hand somebody a new tool, give them ten minutes, and decide whether they are capable. You would expect practice. You would expect repetition. You would expect some awkwardness before competence turns into confidence.

Why would automation be any different?

Automation Is Still a Tool


I think this gets missed because automation carries a lot of baggage with it. People talk about it like it is some total transformation. But at the most practical level, it is still a tool.


And people learn tools the same way they have always learned tools. Through use. Through repetition. Through mistakes. Through correction. Through patience.

Nobody picks up a new saw, a new lift, or a new software system and becomes excellent immediately. They get better by working with it. They build judgment over time. They learn what to watch, what to ignore, when to intervene, and when to let the process run.


Automation deserves that same level of realism.


The problem is not that people struggle early. The problem is pretending they should not.



Be Pragmatic About the Curve


The pragmatic approach is simple.


Acknowledge that there is a curve. Train for it. Give people time to build new instincts.

Do not expect day-one behavior to look like day-180 behavior.


If you bring automation into an operation, the goal is not to turn operators into programmers. The goal is to help good people develop a new definition of what good looks like with a new tool in front of them.


That takes clarity. It takes repetition. It takes patience from leadership. It takes room for people to ask basic questions without feeling behind.


Most of all, it takes honesty.


A new tool changes the work. A changed job requires a changed standard. If you are pragmatic about that from the beginning, the learning curve stops being a surprise and starts becoming part of the plan.
