The Floor Was Costing Us More Than We Thought

When I was a maintenance manager, we were spending almost $10,000 per month on forklift wheels alone.
That number got my attention pretty fast.
A lot of those failures traced back to things that did not seem important until they started showing up on the maintenance bill. Shrink wrap and floor debris were getting pulled into wheel bearings. Forklifts were also driving over small broken boards, and that was causing failures too. Not every wheel problem came from the floor, obviously. But enough of them did.
That changed the way I thought about cleaning.
Before that, it was easy to treat floor debris like background noise. Somebody sweeps. Somebody picks things up. If the place looks mostly fine, you move on. But once you have watched the same junk keep working its way into wheels and equipment, you stop thinking about the floor as a housekeeping issue.
You start seeing it as a lack of operational discipline.

It is not just wheel life, either. Floor debris can turn into lost uptime, safety issues, and a general consistency problem. Debris keeps moving around. Dust builds up. Broken material gets pushed into places it should not be. One shift stays on top of it. Another shift is busy with something else. The mess keeps circulating.
That is why I pay attention to equipment that solves plain, unglamorous problems.
A floor sweeper is not much of a demo. Nobody gathers around it like it is the future. But sometimes the least impressive machine is aimed at the exact thing that keeps costing you money.

What I like about that is not that it sounds advanced. It is that it points to a much simpler idea. Automation does not have to be a major initiative to be worth doing.
A lot of waste in an operation is ordinary. It hides in repeat problems, cleanup, extra wear, small delays, and the kind of maintenance cost people get used to seeing. My forklift-wheel experience was like that. The floor was creating cost, but it did not look like a capital problem until we were paying for it every month.
That is where a practical cleaning tool can make sense. Not because it is impressive. Because it can help remove one recurring source of waste that keeps eating money,

I just think a lot of good automation is plainer than people expect. It does not need to transform the whole operation. Sometimes it just quietly removes an unnecessary cost that should not have been there in the first place.
And when that happens, it usually matters more than the flashy stuff.
